Today I was at the library, and I looked out the window and saw these 3 boys, probably from the middle school. They were walking on the sidewalk and suddenly stopped. I could tell they were just a group of friends. One of the taller boys pushed the smallest one on the ground and started punching him. He’d pick him back up only to throw him on the ground again. He had a smile on his face, but the smaller boy didn’t look like he was having as much fun. He just kept hitting him and putting him in headlocks. These two ladies walked right by them and he picked up the smaller boy and started hugging him closely. The ladies looked at them strangely, but then kept on walking. When they were out of sight, he went right back to hitting him again. The third boy was just standing nearby, not doing anything, not even moving. Eventually, after like, a solid 2 minutes of fighting, the smaller boy was on the ground talking to the taller one. The taller one grabbed his hand, picked him up, then the three boys proceeded to walk onward.

Okay, first off I was kind of terrified because this was going on for two minutes and nobody else saw it or said anything, even when it was on the side of the fucking street on a main road at a public library between two public high schools.

Second, I kind of feel like I should have done something, but by the time I told a library staff it would have been too late and the boys would be gone. I obviously couldn’t do anything else myself.

Third, should I even be taking it as seriously as I am? These kids appeared to be friends, so it wasn’t like that big mean bully vs. little nerd that you see in the movies then expect in real life. I, for one, have never even seen that. All the fights I’ve seen have been between friends, seemingly playing around. With girls it’s usually verbal, and with boys it’s physical.

I may not know a lot about bullying first hand as I’ve never been bullied, verbally, emotionally, or physically. I’ve hardly even witnessed serious fights.

But one thing I do know: often times when people fight, someone’s going to end up hurt, even when you’re just “playing” around.

When they walked away, I wondered if the little boy was going to be okay. I know boys don’t think as deep and emotionally as girls do (that’s not a stereotype that is actually a fact) but I hope his friend doesn’t do that to him anymore, and if he does, then he’ll stop being friends with him.

If he does, then I hope he fucking pays for it.

We can’t just let that go on. I don’t give a shit how young or undeveloped they are, play fighting isn’t cool. That kid’s going to grow up thinking it’s okay to do that, and will continue doing it.

It’s not like I live in a shitty neighborhood or anything, but just because we don’t see it as much as other neighborhoods do, doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist.
